Advocate Aurora Scientific Day returned on May 26 for another successful all-virtual research conference.

For the second straight year, Scientific Day organizers planned the event to take place entirely online, as presenters and attendees tuned in via a virtual webinar platform. This year, more than 300 people viewed part or all of the virtual presentations and poster sessions, while the work of an Advocate Aurora Research Institute researcher, Parvez Akhtar, PhD, was honored as one of three Rieselbach Distinguished Papers, a recognition awarded to research of the highest quality and greatest impact.

“Scientific Day is a chance for research leaders, learners and health care professionals to share their most significant work from the past year,” said Dennis Baumgardner, MD, Scientific Day Committee chair and director of research for Advocate Aurora Health Academic Affairs. “With the 2021 Scientific Day, our 47th annual event, coming more than a year into the pandemic, much of the research appropriately focused on COVID-19 and its effects on patients and providers.”

Residents, fellows, students and health care professionals listened to 42 oral presentations and viewed 29 posters. The event closed with an awards session for the Rieselbach Distinguished Papers, oral presentations and posters.

Scientific Day is made possible through a long-standing partnership between the Research Institute and Academic Affairs, led by Jacob Bidwell, MD, vice president of medical education in Wisconsin and president of Aurora UW Medical Group.

“With the pandemic demonstrating to the world the value of rigorous scientific research, this is an exciting time for our presenters to share their work and answer questions from their colleagues and mentors,” said Amit Acharya, PhD, chief research officer and system vice president for Advocate Aurora and the Research Institute.
