Around Thanksgiving 2023, Verena Owen discovered a lump in her leg, which she mentioned to her physician. This led to a series of tests including an ultrasound, MRI, and ultimately, a biopsy. She was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare cancer that develops in the bones and soft tissues. Sarcoma treatments require experienced specialists, and Aurora is very fortunate to have Dr. Nicolas P. Webber and his team at Aurora Saint Luke’s Medical Center. He has been treating Sarcoma patients for over 15 years.
Verena had her first meeting with Dr. Webber’s team in December to discuss her diagnosis and treatment plan. The path forward was challenging, involving radiation, surgeries and countless follow-ups.
“I met Dr. Webber on one of the worst days of my life. Diagnosed with a scary and rare cancer, I tried to absorb a tsunami of information about test results, staging and treatment plans. I was overwhelmed. Then I heard him say, ’We are treating you for a cure.’ That was the beacon that cut through the darkness that day and the months that followed.”
In August 2024, Verena completed her final treatment appointment. Transitioning into survivorship was a challenge as she coped with both physical and emotional scars, all while coming to terms with the fact that her life had changed in ways she hadn’t expected.
“Throughout my treatment, the compassion and expertise of my team were unwavering. They treated me as a person, not a disease – offering not only their medical skills but also their empathy and kindness,” recalls Verena. “I am eternally grateful to the amazing team of health care professionals and my friends and family who stood by my side and continue to do so as I navigate survivorship. Their support has been a lifeline through this difficult journey. Nobody fights cancer alone.”
Verena wanted to find a way to thank her care team and pay it forward to others who may experience a similar diagnosis. She made her donation through Aurora Health Care Foundation last year. And now, as the anniversary of her surgery is coming up this spring, she has renewed and upped her philanthropic commitment.
Verena is supporting Dr. Webber’s vision to create a cancer survivorship program for adolescents and young adults. Verena is eager to contribute, learning more about the unique and additional challenges young people face in their cancer journey.
“You are not done with cancer after treatment. Coping with cancer can also lead to personal growth, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for life. It’s probably a life-long process to find your new normal and to embrace the future despite the changes and on-going struggles. I will always carry both the terrible and the beautiful parts,” Verena says
Verena expresses profound gratitude for Dr. Webber's exceptional care, highlighting his embodiment of Hippocrates' philosophy: "Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also love for humanity."
“I cannot adequately describe how much Dr. Webber and his team mean to me. I am filled with abundant gratitude that I can refocus on enjoying life again and knowing that I can help others in the future.”
