Faith, volunteerism and philanthropy

Faith, volunteerism and philanthropy
Konrad and Gail are committed to serving others through faith and philanthropy.

In the vibrant community of Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, where faith and medicine intertwine, Gail and Konrad Miskowicz-Retz have spent nearly two decades making a lasting impact. Through their shared commitment to serving others and their deep-rooted faith, they have become an integral part of the hospital. From their involvement as volunteer Catholic Communion Ministers to their dedicated charitable giving, Gail and Konrad’s journey is a testament to the profound impact one can make through philanthropy and service.

Gail and Konrad began serving as Catholic Communion Ministers at Advocate Good Samaritan in 2006 and 2016, respectively. They offer the Holy Eucharist and spiritual support to patients in need. Whether it be a kind word, a prayer, or simply being present, they bring comfort and solace to those under their care. Their genuine compassion and unwavering commitment create meaningful connections with patients during their hospital stay.

In 2014, Gail expanded her volunteer role to Catholic Communion Ministry Coordinator, recruiting, training and managing other ministry volunteers. Konrad actively supports Gail and the new volunteers by participating in their clinical orientation and sharing his knowledge and expertise.

Outside of the hospital, Konrad is a member of the Knights of Columbus and serves as Catholic Communion Minister at St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Church, where Gail also serves as the Catholic Communion Coordinator. Gail also spent many years as a United Way Ambassador.

Grateful Patients

Gail and Konrad have been patients of Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital since 1999, each experiencing firsthand the exceptional care provided by the hospital's medical professionals. Gail was diagnosed with and successfully treated for breast cancer. Her journey to recovery was made possible by early detection and the exemplary work of her care team.

Konrad has experienced cardiothoracic challenges with multiple episodes of pericarditis and pleurisy and a recent bout of atrial flutter successfully ablated by cardiac catheterization. Through it all, they appreciated the professionalism, knowledge and dedication of their physicians and other care providers.

In 2013, prompted by the closing of the Catholic college preparatory high school they had been supporting philanthropically and inspired by their desire to support Advocate’s mission to help people live well, Gail and Konrad made their first philanthropic gift to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. Gail’s employer at the time offered a donation match, which doubled the impact of the couple’s already generous gift.

This act of generosity marked the beginning of Gail and Konrad’s now decade-long commitment to giving back to the hospital. Their contributions have helped enhance patient care and improve the lives of others. Ten years of consistent giving have reinforced their belief in the hospital's impact on the community. They value the compassionate staff, the merging of faith and healthcare, and the continuous improvement of programs and services, made possible in large part due to philanthropic support.
