Providing warmth and comfort for cancer patients
Sarah and the bags of donated blankets

Philanthropy has been a part of Sarah Hohn’s life since she was very young and tagging along with her mother, Linda, while she volunteered through church. Then, 19 years ago, Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it has since metastasized.

“She was told she wouldn’t live more than three years, but she’s still battling cancer today,” shared Sarah. “She is my rock, my mentor, my encourager and my inspiration.”

Linda received help from Pink Heals of Manitowoc County, an organization that provides financial and emotional support to people with cancer in the community.

“My mother was so grateful for the assistance and support she received while she was undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatments and was unable to work. She was also given a fleece blanket, which brought her warmth and comfort during a difficult time.”

Inspired by gratitude, Sarah wanted to give back. She applied for and received a grant through the Thrivent Action Teams charitable grant program. She purchased materials to make fleece blankets and recruited friends and church members to help assemble the blankets. Together, Sarah, Pink Heals and St. Paul Lutheran Church donated 50 blankets to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora Health Center in Two Rivers.

“The donation of blankets brought a smile to our patients’ faces and a moment of joy to their treatment day,” said Gretchen Spindler, RN, BSN, nursing supervisor at the clinic. “Each patient was thankful for the beautifully made blankets and expressed their appreciation of the generosity of others. The donated blankets were a nice display of community support and kindness for our patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments.”

“Volunteering has always been very rewarding to me. It brings focus and peace to my heart as well as smiles to others,” added Sarah. “It was inspiring to have so many people help with this effort. We can accomplish so much more with many hands working together.”
